Childcare with an Open Curriculum 3
From “Kazenoko Letter” No.438 - July 2014

Childcare with an Open Curriculum is the most difficult method among childcare programs. It is difficult if the nursery staff are not very experienced. It is much easier to set up a task in advance and do it all together at once.

The role of an Open Curriculum is to urge a child into being proactive in playing or living, so staff need to encourage children to decide what they want to do. Therefore, staff prepare the materials and indirectly support the children in developing their own play.

With children who haven’t been playing proactively or with infants who still need an adult’s interposition, the staff will help to expand their play.

A child’s intellectual development and their individuality and independence will be established through these decisions about what they want to do, being creative and developing their play from a young age.
